All I ever wanted to do was play in Buddy Rich’s band. That never happened but back in 91 or 92 I got called to play with a horn band called Blue House at a blues festival at the old Jones Street Brewery. We opened for Luther Allison, played our set and then the heavens opened, flooding everything in a complete downpour. Besides getting soaked, I remember good charts and an infectious groove that left me wanting more. Even though Joe P. isn’t Buddy Rich (he’s dead), I’m grateful to have enjoyed Blue House as my musical family for 20+ years.
Early years were spent playing bassoon, clarinet, and saxophone in high school in New Jersey and Indiana. Music school followed with degrees in bassoon performance from DePauw University and University of Nebraska-Lincoln. In between there was a year at North Texas State studying saxophone and playing in the lab bands. Currently I teach middle school band and orchestra in Lincoln.
Along with Blue House I have been fortunate to also play with Nebraska Jazz Orchestra, Lincoln Municipal Band, my sax quartet, Group Sax, and pit orchestras for many traveling shows coming thrugh Omaha and Lincoln. I’ve had the pleasure to share the stage with: Frankie Valli, Lou Rawls, Maroon 5, Johnny Mathis, Kenny Rogers, Wayne Newton, Arlo Guthrie, Ray Charles, Ben Vereen, Kevin Mahogony, Karrin Allyson, Temptations, Platters, Red Skelton, Bob Newhart, Marilyn Maye, Rosemary Clooney. With jazz greats: Don Menza, Freddie Hubbard, Pete Christlieb, Kahil El’Zabar, John Fedchock, Ryan Kisor, Robin Eubanks, Jim Snidero, Terrence Blanchard, Victor Lewis, Claudio Roditi, Marvin Stamm, Dave Stryker, Bill Watrous, Bobby Watson, Claude Williams, Jay McShann, Eldar Djangirov, Joe Locke. Performances in pit orchestras for touring broadway shows have included: Spamalot, Chicago, Producers, Grease, Dream Girls, Crazy for You, Big, Damn Yankees with Jerry Lewis, Hello Dolly with Carol Channing, Cinderella with Ertha Kitt, Annie with Sally Struthers, State Fair with John Davidson, Victor/Victoria with Toni Tenille, Chorus Line, Elf, West Side Story, and a 1-year tour with Sweet Charity.
